Glasses on the run Newsletter #38

Hi,

I hope you are well in the final weeks of another eventful and I hope productive year. For me, the first four months were the ones with the most running I have ever done over such a period, and the last four are the ones with the least running for the last six or seven years. I guess what that demonstrates is that there is always a need for balance.

Anyway, let's proceed.

What was interesting in the business of running

A really interesting interview with Brooks CEO Jim Weber and President Dan Sheridan with Footwear News. They talk about the current state of the performance running market, which has "a bit of a hit factor now because people are willing to pay $140, $160, $180, $200 and beyond." Also about the retro runner aesthetic and Brooks plans for 2024 and beyond.

And a bit more from Brooks CEO Jim Weber. Brooks is owned by Berkshire Hathaway, whose Vice Chair - legendary investor Charlie Munger - unfortunately passed away last month at 99 years of age. So, Jim Weber shares some of his memories and some of the advice he received from Charlie Munger.

Adidas is apparently looking for growth in a wider range of sports. As it prepares for the Paris Summer Olympics in 2024, Adidas is getting into sports like BMX freestyle and skateboarding, as part of its "shift back to sports rather than celebrities..." under the new CEO Bjorn Gulden.

Strava has launched group messaging and direct messaging - apparently something its users have been expecting for years. Privacy is controlled via the profile settings. Let's see how this works out. Strava is planning premium messaging in 2024 in its constant pursuit of new features, as it is trying to grow its paying customer base.
